2022 Conference

The IP & Innovation Researchers of Asia (IPIRA) Network organized the Fourth IP & Innovation Researchers of Asia (IPIRA) Conference on 9-12 February 2022. Due to the continuing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Conference was again held online.

The Fourth IPIRA Conference was organized by the IPIRA Network in cooperation with its established partners: the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the World Trade Organization (WTO), and the following academic institutions: the Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws, International Islamic University Malaysia; Faculty of Law, Universitas Indonesia; Nanyang Business School, Nanyang Technological University; Texas A&M University School of Law; and the Faculty of Law, University of Geneva.

The Organizers were again supported by a distinguished Scientific Committee and several academic institutions wordwide. As highligted in the past, the international composition of the Scientific Committee and the supporting institutions reflects IPIRA Network’s mission to promote worldwide interactions between IP and Innovation researchers.

Despite being again held online, the Conference was a great success with more than 300 scholars and attendees from all over the world!

The Conference was opened by two keynotes delivered, respectively, by Mr. Hasan Kleib, Deputy Director General, Regional and National Development Sector, WIPO, and Ms. Annabel Gonzalez, Deputy Director General, WTO. During the three days of the Conference, presenters focused on a variety of topics, including national and international responses to Covid-19, patents, biotechnology and access to medicines, copyright and culture, trademark protection, IP and competition, plant varieties, and traditional knowledge. Each parallel session was attended attend by a large number of attendees, including other presenters, officials from international organizations and national IP offices, and practitioners. The Conference also featured two plenary sessions, one on “New Technologies and the Future of Intellectual Property Management” and one on “The Role of Intellectual Property for Sustainable Development.” Distinguished speakers included Mr. Marco Aleman, Assistant Director General of the IP and Innovation Ecosystems Sector at WIPO, Mr. Edward Kwakwa, Assistant Director General of the Global Challenges and Partnerships Sector at WIPO, and Mr. Antony Taubman, Director of the IP and Competition Division of WTO.
